Fat measurement and analysis of body composition are carried out with the state-of-the-art Tanita MC 780-P Professional Weight Scale..

It is an 8-electrode Multi-Frequency Technology Measuring System, for extremely high accuracy and we get the results for the total and segmental analysis of weight composition. Human body tissues have a high water content, so they are highly conductive, unlike body fat which has low conductivity. A very low, safe electrical signal of about 50 kHz or 500 mkA is sent through the body. Electricity passes easily through the fluids contained in muscle tissue, but has difficulty passing through fat tissue. This resistance of adipose tissue to electrical flow is called bioelectrical resistance and gives us information about our body composition.

A complete body composition analysis is performed in less than 30 seconds, based on which goals will be determined and together with the experience of our Center and our collaboration, a personal and effective nutrition plan will be designed.

Through the measurements, we can also see if there is any swelling, retention or dehydration, as well as the sarcopenia index which mainly concerns people over 65 years old and also the phase angle (indicator of cellular health).

Adherence to measurement conditions to avoid errors.

The measurements are particularly sensitive in obtaining reliable and well comparable (with previous measurements) results depending on the observance of some fixed assumptions before the measurement, especially regarding the state of body fluids and the intake of fluids and food before the measurement, since the measurements are mainly conducted through the fluids in the body.

During the day, the amount of water in our body tends to move gradually to the lower extremities, due to the pressure exerted by the earth’s gravity. For this reason, there is a tendency for our feet and ankles to swell in the afternoon or evening. The ratio of water in the upper and lower part of the body differs from morning to afternoon and this means that the electrical resistance of our body also differs. For that reason :

  • It is a good idea for measuring machines to use electrodes on both hands and feet (4 or 8 point electrodes) to take measurements in order to reduce the effect of these fluctuations on the results of each measurement.
  • It is also good that the measurements are carried out in the same environment and under the same measurement conditions such as similar time, temperature and liquid steady state.
  • We avoid taking measurements if we know we have fluid retention due to menstruation or medication.
  • We avoid intense physical exercise 8-10 hours before the measurement
  • Avoid eating food and liquids (including water, coffee, tea and any liquid) for 2-4 hours before the measurement
  • We avoid alcohol for 12-16 hours before the measurement due to the possibility of retention.
