What is Phase Angle?

Did you know that phase angle is an excellent indicator of cell health based on the distribution of water in and out of the cell membrane!

This index is now recognized as a global health index in assessing the overall health of the body. It has a strong correlation with cell health and more specifically, an increase in phase angle implies an increase in cell health.

What does Phase Angle mean?

  • High Phase Angle is associated with large amounts of intact, healthy cell membranes, good nutritional status and good health.
  • Low Phase Angle, seems to be consistent either with the inability of the cells to store energy or with an indication of damage to the selective permeability of the cell membrane.

How does the Phase Angle calculated?

Phase Angle is the time delay between an excitation and the voltage produced by an alternating current in a conducting medium. It is expressed in degrees of phase shift and is calculated as the ratio between Resistance and Reactance.

Interpretation of the Phase Angle

Increasing the phase angle could mean:

  • increase in muscle mass (cell mass),
  • fluid depletion (recovery from infection or injury or dehydration)
  • fat loss

Reducing the phase angle could mean:

  • loss of muscle mass
  • increased fluid (eg inflammation or infection)
  • fat gain
